The Faculty of Medicine at CUHK (CU Medicine) has discovered a novel approach to treating glaucoma. In mouse trials, the method has been shown to restore nearly 70% of lost vision.

Through experiments on mice, the CUHK research team found that inhibiting a specific "neuroendocrine growth hormone" protein in ocular tissues can enhance the survival rate of retinal nerve cells, suppress the degeneration and death of the optic nerve caused by glaucoma, and restore impaired visual function.

The team noted that this discovery provides more effective preclinical evidence for the treatment of primary chronic glaucoma. They aim to translate this innovative therapy into clinical application within 5 to 7 years, and will also investigate the potential benefits of the related therapy for high-risk groups, including patients with high myopia.
