Heavy rains linked to the remnants of Storm Maysak have caused severe flooding across Guangxi, leaving at least two people dead and affecting over 50,000 residents. Chinese President Xi Jinping issued instructions urging full-scale rescue and disaster relief efforts.
Online footage shows fast-rising floodwaters submerging entire villages, with residents stranded on rooftops awaiting rescue. In Hengzhou, a reservoir breach led to serious downstream flooding. One bank employee was seen wading through chest-deep water to escape.
In one incident, a family of three was trapped in their home, nearly fully submerged, and rescued after about ten hours. Over the past three days, intense rainfall has broken daily records in areas such as Guigang and Fangcheng, with totals comparable to a full year’s rainfall in northern cities. Authorities have raised Guangxi’s flood alert to the highest level, warning that severe weather will continue for the next two days.
