Another nationwide power outage in Cuba, the 3rd in a week

Cuba experienced another outage in the National Energy System on Tuesday leaving the entire country without power, according to the Ministry of Energy and Mines.

This is the third incident of its kind in little over a week against a backdrop of vulnerability in the island's power grid which is subject to a US oil embargo that prevents the arrival of crude oil used to power electricity generation and the economy.

Authorities did not disclose the reason for the latest power outage, which follows outages last week that left more than nine million Cubans without power. The Ministry's brief social media announcement simply stated that protocols for its recovery have been activated.

The power outages are having a severe impact on the population, combined with the energy blockade, they have led to transport disruptions, reduced work hours and flight cancellations.
