The Legislative Council has passed a bill which places a blanket ban on all smoking at the city's construction sites.

The measure will come into effect on Friday.

Offenders will be subject to a 3,000-dollar fine.

The latest amendment to the Construction Sites (Safety) Regulations also indicated that contractors must take all reasonable steps to ensure no one is smoking on site.

Offenders may be subject to a maximum fine of 400,000 dollars.

The measure pertains to all buildings undergoing construction works, while those with occupants will be exempted.
