Benjamin Netanyahu meets Trump at White House

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu meets US President Donald Trump at the White House in their first sit-down meeting since launching a joint war against Iran.

Meanwhile, the US and Saudi Arabia launch strikes on Iran-backed groups in Iraq saying they were responsible for drone attacks on Saudi oil facilities.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he had an "excellent" meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House, their first sit-down since launching a joint war against Iran.

Israeli officials say Netanyahu reiterated to Trump Israel will always share its intelligence with the US.

However, he stresses the US has its own timeline and considerations to factor in, including other allied countries in the region that would be affected if Washington were to escalate militarily.

US President Trump, calls his talks with Netanyahu a "very good meeting" where "many important subjects were discussed."

Meanwhile, the US and Saudi Arabia launch strikes on Iran-backed groups in Iraq on Wednesday.

They say the groups were responsible for drone attacks on Saudi oil facilities.

Iran says blaming the groups for the attacks are a "major miscalculation".

The US military also says its air defences had averted a surprise Iranian attack on US troops in the region.

In a statement read out on TV, Iran's government says recent US strikes destroyed an airport and a marine control tower, and caused damage to 12 bridges and two tunnels in the country among other infrastructure.

Back-and-forth attacks in recent days end a brief pause in the fighting.

Elsewhere, Zawtar al-Gharbieh becomes the first village to be handed over to the Lebanese army under a US-brokered "pilot zones" agreement between Lebanon and Israel.

The deal, reached after nearly three months of direct talks, calls for a phased Israeli withdrawal from parts of southern Lebanon, the deployment of the Lebanese army into those areas and the eventual disarmament of Hezbollah.

Hezbollah strongly opposes the negotiations and the agreement.

While Israeli troops withdrew from Zawtar al-Gharbieh last week, they remain stationed in neighbouring areas, making the village an early test of whether the pilot zone process can be expanded to other parts of southern Lebanon.
