5.8-magnitude earthquake jolts southwest Japan

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.8 rattled Japan's southwestern prefecture of Kumamoto on Wednesday evening, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The same region experienced a powerful magnitude-7.1 quake the previous day, which has so far left at least 18 dead.
