During a triathlon in Tai Mei Tuk, Tai Po this morning, a 59-year-old participant went missing and is suspected to have drowned while competing under a Yellow Rainstorm Warning.
The Triathlon Association of Hong Kong, China expressed deep concern over the incident, stating it is fully cooperating with search and rescue operations.
The swim leg of the triathlon began at 6:10 AM under the Yellow Rainstorm Warning. Covering a distance of 1,500 meters, participants typically finish the swim within 30 to 45 minutes.
Police received a report shortly before 8:00 AM stating that a 59-year-old participant failed to return to shore after entering the water, sparking fears that he had drowned and gone missing.
Fire Services divers were subsequently deployed to search the waters off Plover Cove in Tai Mei Tuk,
with Marine Police officers also on scene assisting in the rescue effort.
Some participants said their performance was not particularly affected by the weather during the race.
