Customs detains woman smuggling 3 cats worth $30k

Customs officers at the Lok Ma Chau Spur Line Control Point detains a woman entering Hong Kong suspected of smuggling three cats worth 30,000 dollars.

Customs officers on Wednesday intercepted a 55-year-old Chinese Mainland woman arriving to the city, and seized three cats from her backpack. She was subsequently arrested.

The case has been handed over to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department for follow-up.

Authorities remind the public that illegal importation of animals carries a maximum penalty of 50,000 dollars and one year imprisonment.
