Chinese calligraphy showcased by performance group

Handwriting is becoming a lost art as technology marches on. However, one performance group is breaking barriers with an innovative arts-tech programme that helps children learn Chinese calligraphy through interactive performances.

Feel the rhythm at the tip of the brush across different calligraphy styles. The journey starts with the seal script, Sit on the floor, and find that balance in the clerical script.

Take a walk to experience the regular script.

Move faster, turn into swans to imitate the shape of the running script. Then speed up again and plunge into the vibrant energy of the cursive script.

In "Big adventures with Brush and Ink", around 300 participants are seen touring four areas designed according to the structure of calligraphy.

Smell the ink. Let's give it a try. This boy finds it fun, saying that dipping the brush in ink felt very different from using a regular pencil. This girl says she can learn new characters by holding the brush.

Calligraphy and ink art master Dr. Chui Pui-chee says children can gain more than just calligraphy skills. He explains when writing with brushes, children can appreciate the variations in strokes-such as thickness and texture, while also training their observational skills and fine motor movements.

First launched two years ago, the production has won seven international awards. With renewed sponsorship from the Hong Kong Jockey Club, it returns as an upgraded version at Yuen Long Theatre, with around 5,000 participants.

Chinese, people feel that it's very difficult to learn, but if we tell them that it's just an icon, it's like an emoji, because every character is just an image. You just understand the logic behind the Chinese language.Maybe it's easier for non-Chinese people to learn Chinese.And also it's a fun way because it's interactive, and it's not a rigid format.

Also, you are not facing a phone, you are facing a real space.You are using your ear, your nose, to smell the ink, to listen to the sound of the text. Then it's a more three-dimensional way to understand Chinese.

Practice makes perfect, each participant will receive a calligraphy package, so they can practice at home with real ink.
