British police say they have opened a criminal investigation into allegations that party Reform UK, led by Nigel Farage, broke rules against foreign donations.

This following a broadcast of an undercover investigation in which two senior Reform UK officials appeared to discuss ways money from an American financier could be channelled through his UK-based son.

UK electoral law says parties can only accept donations from British voters or UK-registered businesses.

The Metropolitan Police say after the broadcast, the force received a number of reports relating the matter and "detectives have assessed the information provided and determined that there are potential offences requiring investigation."

After the documentary was aired, the party suspended Dan Jukes, a longtime adviser to Farage, and chief James Orr.

Reform UK in a statement says it "denies any wrongdoing and will fully cooperate with the investigation."
