CE demands report on malfunctioning lifts at Queen Mary Hospital

Chief Executive John Lee is demanding the Development Bureau to deliver a report within one month regarding the high number of malfunctioning lifts at Queen Mary Hospital's new expansion project.

He emphasises that government personnel found to be involved with the project will be held responsible.

Queen Mary Hospital's newest block has been experiencing major technical problems with just four out of its 28 lifts working properly.

The Development Bureau explains an issue related to the exterior of the elevators was among the main causes of the defection.

This as the affected lifts were earlier issued relevant permits last year.

When asked about the situation, Chief Executive John Lee stresses authorities will hold all parties and individuals overseeing construction and installation of the lifts responsible.

The CE further says any government personnel found connected with the project will also bear responsibility for the elevator failures, adding that the Development Bureau has already submitted a preliminary report, with a full report to be delivered within one month.

The Development Bureau earlier urged relevant contractors and subcontractors to rectify the situation before the fourth quarter of this year.

Records show a fatal industrial accident occurred during the construction of the Queen Mary Hospital expansion project last year, which involved the death of a 57-year-old worker handling electricity repairs on a lift.
