Venezuelan man detained by ICE still has bullet in body

A Venezuelan man shot by a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent was in custody Monday at an ICE detention centre in Texas, after he was released from hospital with a bullet still stuck in his back.

Speaking by phone during a news conference, Wilber Rafael Garces Perez says doctors did not remove the bullet because it is near his spine.

Perez was making a delivery on Sunday when his car was hit twice by ICE officers in an unmarked truck, according to Perez's lawyer.

The detainee says he was not doing well and did not receive the medical attention he needed while being held at a detention centre about 200 kilometres from the state capital Austin.

The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, says it is investigating the shooting of a Venezuelan man in the US illegally who "had a final order of removal."
