Floods in northeastern Spain leave at least 2 dead, 1 missing

Two people have died in Spain's northeastern Catalonia region and another person is missing due to heavy rains and flooding, authorities said Sunday.

Catalan's regional leader confirmed the second fatality in a message on social media on Sunday.

Firefighters said the missing person had been swept away by a stream in Pineda de Mar, a town to the north of Barcelona.

Regional authorities issued a red alert warning on Saturday, urging people to stay inside from 8 p.m. until 2 p.m. on Sunday due to torrential rain in Barcelona and Girona and nearby areas.

Aerial imagery showed swollen rivers and streams.

Firefighters in Catalonia on Sunday said they had responded to more than 1,500 calls for flood-related help.
