New crematorium to come at Wo Hop Shek Cemetery with new tech

The government plans to build a crematorium at Wo Hop Shek Cemetery.

The facility aims to open by 2032 with the estimated cost at over 2 billion dollars.

In the Environment and Ecology Bureau's documents submitted to the Legislative Council, the facility in Wo Hop Shek, Fanling will include ten new cremators, ritual halls and a mortuary.

The bureau says in view of the ageing population, the number of deaths and the need for cremation is expected to increase year by year.

At the same time, many existing cremators will need to be replaced in phases after long-time use.

The new crematorium will introduce new technologies to improve cremation efficiency with goals to cut the average time it takes per cremation from the current average of about 90 minutes to 75 minutes.
