French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu said he had instructed
prefects to impose limited and localised curfews in cities to prevent
more rioting and looting, following the past weekend's violence.
Speaking after an emergency meeting with top government officials,
Lecornu said it was a miracle no one was killed, and he defended
the work of police officers faced with what he called violent groups.
He said details of the areas to be placed under curfew will be provided
later Monday.
This as Interior Minister Laurent Nunez offered his resignation
on Sunday, but was asked to stay on by President Emmanuel Macron.
Macron asked for the introduction of new policing tactics to put an
end to the violence.
Groups set fire to objects in the streets and looted businesses in Paris,
Lyon, Marseille and other cities on Sunday, and at least 2,400 people
were arrested across the country.
