The government expects peak border-crossing traffic at the new Huanggang
Port between 11pm and 2am from this Friday to Sunday, covering Halloween Eve
as well as the days before and after.
Last weekend, "Halloween Month" events across various districts in the city,
along with a major concert held at Kai Tak Sports Park, attracted many
mainland visitors to Hong Kong.
Traffic congestion occured on the vehicle lanes at the new Huanggang Port
after midnight for two consecutive days.
Chief Secretary for Administration Eric Chan says in order to deal with the situation,
all clearance channels will be opened in advance.
Multiple measures will be implemented in response, including prioritising public
transport.
He added private cars may face wait times of at least an hour to cross
the border, while authorities will also crack down on illegal
cross-boundary hire cars.
When asked whether the issue stemmed from the design, Chan disagreed.
He said the core of the problem lies in the large volume of vehicles or travellers
crossing the border within the same period of time.
Authorities noted the frequencey overnight public transport services to the port
will be enhanced from Friday to Sunday.
