An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck off Japan's Iwate Prefecture early Sunday. No tsunami warning was issued.
The tremor occured at a depth of about 40 kilometres, and measured a lower 5 on Japan's seismic intensity scale of 7.
No abnormalities were reported at the Higashidori nuclear power plant in Aomori or at the Onagawa nuclear power complex in Miyagi Prefecture.
A 7.2 magnitude earthquake jolted the same region last Thursday, injuring at least 10 people.
