The Red Army crossed Guizhou's Chishui River four times during the Long March.
Along its banks, a tourist route that combines history with natural scenery is drawing more and more visitors eager to learn more about the Long March.
This family from Guangzhou, came to Tucheng Town on the middle reaches of the Chishui river to retrace this part of the Long March.
Mrs Jiang believes that China's new generation has grown up enjoying an abundance of material riches. She hopes that they can relive the scenes of the difficult battle times.
In late January 1935, the Red Army fought a fierce battle with the Sichuan Army at Qinggangpo area, before pulling back to Tucheng Town to regroup. At the time, Tucheng was home to the largest salt distribution depot along the Chishui River. Salt was expensive back then, and the people of Guizhou had long suffered from salt shortages.
Lin Chengying, daughter-in-law of a veteran army soldier, recalled that salt warehouses were hidden away by landlords. The Red Army decided to open them
and distribute salt to the locals, answering the desperate demands of the residents. Meanwhile Bing An Ancient Town, built on steep cliffs along the banks of the Chishui River, was once garrisoned by the Red Army Troops. The boat used for crossing the river back then, along with straw sandals, weapons and other artifacts,
are now preserved in a memorial hall, giving visitors a in-depth look at the campaign. Following the footsteps of the Red Army down along the Chishui River, brings visitors to the Chishui Danxia Waterfall, a national 5A level tourist attraction, featuring a red sandstone landscape that is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site.
Standing at 76 meters tall and 80 meters wide, the Chishui Danxia Waterfall is the largest waterfall found in both the Yangtze River Basin and across Danxia regions.
