A monk from the mainland allegedly stole a bronze statue that depicts Sun Wukong -- or the mythological Monkey King -- worth 2,000 dollars near a Tsuen Wan Buddhist temple on Monday.
He has been remanded in custody pending trial.
The 57-year-old defendant Zha Jianxin entered the city on a two-way permit and was charged with one count of theft.
The case was heard at the West Kowloon Magistrates' Court and adjourned until September 23 for further hearing.
The defendant was denied bail.
