A woman randomly stabbed two people in New York City's Times Square killing one person and leaving the another injured.

The attacker was subsequently shot and killed by the police.

New York Police Department officers fatally shot a woman near Times Square on Monday after she pulled out two knives from a shopping bag and stabbed a 68-year-old man in the abdomen.

She then attacked a 32-year-old woman stabbing her in the same area mere moments later.

Both the injured were taken to hospital, where the woman was later pronounced dead.

The man is currently in stable condition.

The incident happened near the NYPD substation just outside One Times Square, the area that hosts the US' largest city's annual New Year's Eve ball drop celebration, and often considered one of the most heavily touristed spots in New York.

Authorities have also confirmed the identity of the assailant.

Perpetrator in this case, has been identified as 49-year-old Pamela Cisneros of Queens.

She was pronounced deceased at Bellevue Hospital.

Cisneros has a documented mental health history with the NYPD, with one incident in 2018 and one in 2019.

She has no arrest history with the department.

At this point of in the investigation, we have no reason to believe this incident was an act of terrorism.

Our thoughts, not only for those of us who are here right now, but of the entire city are with the families of both of these victims.

We know that those families' lives have been shattered by what took place today.

We will continue to hold them close as the hours and days and weeks continue from this moment.

The NYPD closed part of 7th Avenue after the attack and urged members of the community to avoid the area.
