AFCD defends assessment of dogs suspected to be fighting breeds

The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department has defended its decision to remove certain dogs for further assessment after they were suspected of being fighting dogs.

It rejected claims that officers can determine whether a dog is a fighting breed simply by looking at it.

The department said veterinarians assess dogs based on their physical characteristics, proportions and body structure to determine whether they possess high-risk traits associated with fighting breeds.

It said this approach is internationally recognised and scientifically based.

The department added that genetic testing is not the best way to identify fighting dogs, as most dogs carry genes from multiple breeds and may not develop characteristics associated with fighting breeds.

Dogs undergoing assessment are temporarily housed at an AFCD animal management centre. Owners can arrange visits and appeal within 14 days of receiving the classification result.
