Leaders of Pacific nations could not issue a unanimous statement

about China's launch of a ballistic missile into their waters.

The willingness of Pacific Island Forum members to agree to a

joint reproach of China on the missile launch was seen by some

as the latest episode for the region's political jostling.

It is understood Nauru dissented from the statement of concern,

and Kiribati did not take part in the session.

China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Guo Jiakun

says China is willing to work with South Pacific countries

to contribute to maintaining peace, development, stability and

prosperity in the region.
