New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani says more people have now died from 9/11-related illnesses than were killed on the day of the attacks.

During a press briefing ahead of the anniversary, he said many survivors and workers have faced years of illness and hardship after being exposed to toxic air at Ground Zero.

This, ahead of the 25-year-mark since the September 11 attacks, as the mayor highlights the lasting toll on survivors and those who worked around Ground Zero.

Mamdani also announced a more than $US 34 million commitment to create a public portal documenting the city's response to the attacks.

He said the portal will include hundreds of thousands of pages of records from city agencies, including documents concerning toxic air around Ground Zero and what city officials knew and when they knew it.

Mamdani said the effort is intended to provide greater transparency and accountability for survivors and their families.
