Meta unveils AI service in HK, bringing Cantonese chat

Social media giant Meta has officially brought its home-grown AI system to Hong Kong.

Meta AI is currently available through the standalone Meta AI app and its web version.

It will gradually be rolled out across WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and Threads, where users will need to link their personal accounts.

The AI can answer questions and handle reasoning tasks.

Meta says the model can understand local culture, language and context, and users can choose Cantonese, with responses delivered in a more conversational style.

But there is a caveat. Technology experts are reminding users to avoid uploading sensitive personal information to reduce the risk of data leakage.

As for personal conversations on WhatsApp, Meta says its AI does not have access to private messages between users, which will remain protected by end-to-end encryption.
