Okinawa's gubernatorial election sees a candidate backed

by Japan's Liberal Democratic Party win, beating the incumbent

who is against the the expansion of military deployment

in the islands.

Genta Koja, as supported by LDP and its conservative allies,

said he will focus on cost of living, developing new industry and

child care support issues.

He beat incumbent Denny Tamaki, who is considered

a reformer and has been

the governor of Okinawa since 2018.

Tamaki is also known for opposing the relocation of the US Marine

Corps Air Station, a contentious issue among Okinawans.

With Koja's win, the Japanese government is likely going to

move ahead with the controversial project.
