US senators offer polarising views on oversight

of artificial intelligence.

This as US President Donald Trump leads the opposition

to recent calls by tech leaders seeking greater government oversight,

including Anthropic's Dario Amodei, OpenAI's Sam Altman and xAI's Elon Musk.

At the Dreamforce conference in San Francisco,

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei reiterates

his views on the need to examine the safe advancement

of AI, putting forth a three-step plan to facilitate a healthy

development without "sacrificing commercial advantage

or the United States' lead in AI."

During the same conference, Jensen Huang, CEO Of Nvidia, though,

views these concerns through a different lens,

saying market forces already exist without the need for laws or regulations.

These disparaging views are also creeping up within the US government,

with politicians weighing safety and competitiveness.

Speaking at a pro-human AI conference in Washington,

Progressive US Senator Bernie Sanders and Steve Bannon,

a close ally of US President Donald Trump, share a rare moment of

agreement as they both call for stronger oversight of

AI around concerns the technology will harm humans.

Sanders touts the AI American Sovereign Wealth Fund Act,

which will require half of the board members of AI companies

to be appointed by the public.

He goes on to say the technology has the potential to trigger

impact on a global scale.

Bannon says the tech industry's executives cannot be trusted

to self-regulate because

"they are disingenuous and they lie."

Still, over on Capital Hill, some politicians share Trump's sentiment

that a free market approach is what

will keep the US in a competitive lead.

AI governance is expected to be on the agenda in the meeting

between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Trump in Washington next week.
