CE addresses Policy Address and Five-Year Plan questions at Legco

Chief Executive John Lee addresses lawmakers on the latest Policy Address and the city's first Five-Year Plan at an interactive exchange question and answer session held at the Legislative Council.

He stresses the ultimate goal of the Five-Year Plan is to improve the livelihoods and well-being of residents, adding that authorities will also continue their efforts to attract talent in the AI sector to the city.

The CE arrived at the Legco chamber at around 10:30 this morning to conduct the interactive session with the city's legislators.

This as several legislators raised concerns about how the Five-Year Plan can improve both the livelihoods and satisfaction of the community.

In five years' time, in socioeconomic terms, in terms of housing, education and employment, will we be in a better place? Will we see a marked improvement in our sense of gain and fulfilment?

We want to achieve new breakthroughs in economic development, we hope to expand our global competitiveness, enhance the speed and effectiveness of Northern Metropolis development.

We also want to enhance social well-being markedly and integrate into serving the national overall development. We need to work together to achieve these five major objectives.

I believe in the second Five-Year Plan we would have achieved the five objectives set out in the first one. The ultimate goal, as I said, is to make people's lives better.

Regarding the Policy Address' statements on AI application in Hong Kong society, several lawmakers have questioned the direction of the technology's development.

Given the rapid development of AI, how can we properly equip wage-earners so that they can keep up with the development of AI?

The US and the West are driving away their top-notched talent. How do we bring the outflowing talent from the West to Hong Kong?

Everyone should be literate in AI. It's just information technology just like your mobile phone. So, in our assistance for small and medium enterprises, we talk about AI assisting them with upgrading and transformation so that they become better at using AI.

Indeed, we are short of AI talent. Mr. Tang made a good point -- we have to make a real effort in attracting such talent.

Chief Executive John Lee also took the opportunity to thank lawmakers for their full support for the city's first Five-Year Plan.
