Woman dies from suspected canine attack in Yuen Long

A woman who was cycling in Yuen Long last night died after she was attacked by several dogs. She suffered from severe injuries to the head and neck. This as the canines involved in the incident have yet to be found.

The police received reports at around 1 am from passersby of a woman lying unconscious on Pok Wai South Road near Nam Sang Wai in Yuen Long. She was found lying next to a bicycle and surrounded by three to four dogs.

Rescue personnel who arrived on site noted the woman was no longer breathing and covered in blood. She was later confirmed dead at the hospital.

Authorities recovered CCTV footage showing the 27-year-old woman initially attempting to return home on her bike from the Yuen Long MTR Station. At around midnight, the woman was chased by three dogs as she reached Pok Wai South Road.

No suspicious individuals or vehicles were seen in the footage. Initial reports have shown that the deceased suffered lethal head and neck wounds, as well as severe bite injuries on all four limbs. It is believed most of the injures were caused by animals.

Further investigations indicated wild boars and dogs often appear in that area. This as police officers have yet to find the responsible animals, while the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department will also assist authorities with capturing the canines.

Authorities said the dogs seen in the CCTV footage were medium-sized, adding that it is not yet known whether the woman provoked the animals or had contact with them before her death.

Meanwhile, residents in Nam Sang Wai shared their experiences with canines when traversing the area. This man noted he would be chased by three to four dogs when cycling past the area, with the canines often barking at him.

While this resident said the road is usually quite peaceful, but would avoid the area during the night.

Addressing the community's concerns of recent increase in dog attacks, some dog trainers urged those encountering hostile canines to stand still and straight to prevent the animals from sensing weakness.
