Denmark, Greenland and the US to sign agreement in New York

The United States plans to re-establish a Cold War-era military base in southern Greenland and set up another on the east coast, now used by the Danish dog sled patrol, under a deal to be signed with Denmark, Greenland and the United States on Tuesday.

This as the Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said she is looking forward to her meeting with US President Donald Trump in New York where she arrived for the upcoming United Nations General Assembly.

Denmark, Greenland and the United States are expected to sign their new agreement at the United Nations General Assembly in New York Tuesday morning. The text of the agreement has not been made public and the few people familiar with the deal, speaking on condition of anonymity, said its details will not be finalised until it is signed.

A White House spokesperson would only say that Tuesday's signing would "secure and defend the security of Greenland and the United States." Last week's announcement by US President Donald Trump of a deal to bolster US military presence in Greenland but keep the island under Danish control, came after months of threats by the president to seize the semiautonomous territory of a NATO ally.

Talking to reporters Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said she is looking forward to meeting Trump in New York and that she believes they have made a good deal. "What we have been working on for many months, and what we have negotiated, is to create a legally binding agreement that deals with security and defence policy," she said. Adding, "It is a good deal and it is for all parties involved."

With the announcement of the pact, Trump is able to tout a foreign policy achievement ahead of the midterm elections in the United States.
