Zoo Atlanta readies enclosure for Chengdu panda duo

Two giant pandas arrive at Zoo Atlanta as part of an

agreement between the Chinese and American governments.

Zoo officials say they are excited about Ping Ping and Fu Shuang's

relocation and have made preparations to ensure the pair

of bears feel right at home.

“We collaborated with our colleagues from the panda base to make our facilities bigger. So we made more space for pandas. We also want to ensure that they have good food, good bamboo, so we are collecting a lot of bamboo from the Atlanta area to make sure that they have plenty of food to eat,” says Sam Rivera, Vice President of Animal Heath at Zoo Atlanta.

Visitors will have to wait awhile to see Ping Ping and Fu Shuang, as they

undergo a month-long quarantine in a biosecure area inside the zoo's new

giant panda complex. 

Ping Ping and Fu Shuang disembarked a cargo aircraft, arriving Sunday

as part of a new ten-year agreement between Zoo Atlanta and the

China Wildlife Conservation Association makes Atlanta one of three zoos in

the US to house giant pandas, along with the

San Diego Zoo in California and the Smithsonian's National Zoo in Washington, DC.
