The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department said elevators in at least 78 buildings in Hong Kong are missing door frame components.

Authorities are now requiring all relevant contractors to assess whether elevators installed or replaced over the past decade fulfil fire safety requirements.

This after Taizoom Elevator Company was earlier suspected of submitting bogus reports to the EMSD pertaining to fire-resistant door frames on elevators.

The government demanded contractors to submit reports on the elevators' permit numbers, organisations that issued them and documents proving fire-resistance before the 15th of next month.

Some lawmakers, however, are sceptical of the measure, saying that the policy seemingly involves contractors assessing themselves, and suggested assessments to be conducted by third parties.
