Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has confirmed
the fire at an Alberta military base killed four service members
an injured 39,
calling the incident "one of the worst tragedies on Canadian soil
in peacetime."
Authorities investigating the incident said officials knew about the
fires for hours but believed it was contained before winds suddenly shifted.
This, as Alberta is set to face a nonbinding referendum that could see
the province take the first steps towards separating from Canada.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney addressed the nation following
the deadly fire that claimed the lives of four service members at the
Canadian Armed Forces base in Wainwright, Alberta Sunday and has
ordered flags to be flown at half-staff at all
federal buildings.
Major General Wade Rutland said military officials knew about the
fire for hours but believed it was contained before winds
suddenly shifted, sending flames racing toward the soldiers.
This as Albertans share a moment of silence for the victims of the fire
at a pro-Canada rally ahead of a nonbinding referendum that
could see the oil-rich province put forth the first steps towards separation
from Canada.
