The Hong Kong Construction Industry Employees General Union announced that wages for construction trades would be frozen for the 2026/27 financial year, excluding marble workers whose wages will increase by 6.7%.
Marble workers are set to see their daily wages rise from 1,500 to 1,600 dollars.
This after the union earlier surveyed close to 1,100 frontline workers and stakeholders in the construction sector.
According to the survey, some 60% are currently employed, while more than half of the surveyed said the wages have not changed over the past year, with 40 even noting a decrease.
Close to 70% believe there is a substantial difference between their actual wages and the average announced by the union.
Meanwhile, more than 60% of the surveyed said they support a monthly salary mechanism, with the general union stressing the measure could ensure job stability for most workers.
