Serbian police kills assailant outside Israeli embassy

Serbian police killed a knife-wielding assailant outside the Israeli embassy in Belgrade after the unidentified attacker stabbed a gendarmerie guard just after midnight.

The event is being treated as as a terrorist incident.

Serbian Interior Minister Ivica Dacic stated the attacker was shot and killed by the wounded officer in "self-defence."

Authorities raised the national terror threat to its highest level and stepped up security nationwide.

Investigators revealed security agencies had previously monitored the suspect who displayed support for the Islamic State online.

The incident occurred just after Israel and Serbia's parliamentary elections.
