At least 50 people have died in Spain's Toledo after two high-speed trains collided.

This marks the second deadly rail accident on the same line in less than a year.

Regional authorities in the Castilla-La Mancha region in Spain warned the death toll was likely to rise after several carriages derailed and plunged down an embankment near Toledo.

The collision involved Renfe and Iryo trains carrying 544 passengers.

In response to the tragedy, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and political leaders suspended election campaigning.

Emergency services established temporary shelters in nearby towns as investigations into the cause commenced.

The crash came just nine months after another train accident occurred in January which killed 45 people.
