William Wong, who was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving, has resigned as a Legislative Council (LegCo) member. LegCo President Starry Lee stated that the resignation reflects Wong’s willingness to take responsibility, adding that whether a by-election will be held is up to the government to arrange.

"As the President of the Legislative Council, I fully understand and acknowledge that the general public holds LegCo members to a very high standard," said Wong.

"Professor Wong Kam-fai's incident has sparked intense public discussion, and as President, I have been busy dealing with this matter over the past few days."

"Professor Wong's resignation reflects his willingness to take responsibility. I believe his case will be heard in court later in accordance with the law and regulations. Every LegCo member is well aware that society has high expectations for councilors and public officers. Therefore, I hope all members can learn from this experience and lesson, hold themselves to a stricter standard, remain diligent in their work, and be more disciplined in their personal conduct. As for a by-election, we await specific arrangements from the government."
