A new survey suggests Hong Kong's cat owners are spending more money than ever on their feline companions, as an emerging "silver cat economy" drives demand for premium pet products and services.
A survey conducted by Exhibition Group in June interviewed around 2500 cat owners through an online questionnaire.
More than 85% of respondents say their spending on cats had increased over the past 12 months, reached 2,062 dollars per month, up 2.8% from a year ago.
Cat food, cat litter and healthcare products remain the three largest expenses, accounting for nearly 70% of total spending.
This cat owner says she spends roughly 3000 dollars each month on her pet.
The survey also found cats are getting older. The number of cats aged between four and seven rose from 20.8% to 28.2% this year.
The General Manager of Exhibition Group Limited Chu Suet-Ling says, with owners becoming more willing to spend on medical care for their ageing pets, the "silver cat economy" is expected to fuel market growth in the next few years.
Another trend highlighted in the survey is the rise of multi-cat households.
Respondents keeping three cats increased from 11.3% to 16.9% between 2024 and 2026.
The findings are released ahead of the Hong Kong Cat Expo, where exhibitors will showcase a wide range of pet products, cat-themed merchandise and interactive attractions later this month.
As spending on cats continues to reach record highs, the organisation says demand for premium cat products and services is expected to grow in the years ahead.
