US President Donald Trump is mulling measures to isolate the International Criminal Court in an effort to head off any of its future attempts to threaten US personnel.
Established in 2002, the institution asserts jurisdiction only if a member state is unable or unwilling to prosecute atrocities itself.
The United States has never been a member of the ICC. Trump and others in Washington have long railed against its purported authority to prosecute American officials and servicemen.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio cites calls from activists and others for the ICC to probe into US personnel, including over Trump's migrant deportation, and says the court is waging a war against the nation with statutes, compacts and "the force of so-called international law."
Quoting officials, Reuters reports the State Department's measures under consideration include travel bans, visa rovocations, increased sanctions and pressure on other countries to diplomatically isolate the ICC.
