Statutory work injury compensation for platform workers reviewed

Following the Labour and Welfare Bureau's suggestion to offer statutory work injury compensation for platform workers, the Legco Manpower Panel further reviewed the details on Friday.

The proposed law would cover those providing food and goods delivery service and would require the platform companies to cover the cost.

Legco Member Peter Shiu noted the companies' operating costs would increase accordingly, adding that a platform company told him if the plan is to be implemented, the yearly premium would be 100 million dollars according to the insurance company.

Secretary for Labour and Welfare Chris Sun said the final changes would depend on the specific items of the compensation arrangements. He acknowledged that operating costs of companies would increase, but efforts will be made to find a balance where companies' affordability can be taken into account.
