Water pipe replacement in Wong Tai Sin

The Water Supplies Department is exploring a priority water pipe replacement programme in Wong Tai Sin to reduce the risk of recurring leaks and bursts.

In a paper submitted to Wong Tai Sin District Council members, the department says when leaks or bursts occur, emergency repairs are carried out and sections of pipe near the damaged area are replaced where possible.

However, to minimise disruption to water supplies and traffic, it is often impractical to replace entire stretches of ageing piplines beneath busy roads.

Authorities say it hopes to secure public and community support for a more comprehensive replacement approach under the programme.

Separately, priority has been given to improvement works on higher-risk pipelines.

About half of around 8 kilometres of water mains in Wong Tai Sin have been replaced or repaired.
