MTR's Tuen Mun South Station for the Tuen Ma Line is slated to open in 2030. The extension to reach the new terminus may only be 2.4 kilometres long, but the construction project needed plenty of planning.

The future Tuen Mun South Station will be located on Wu King Road, close to the Tuen Mun Ferry Pier. Commenced in 2023, the project will extend the Tuen Ma Line by approximately 2.4 kilometres from Tuen Mun Station through a viaduct. An intermediate station, A16, will also be built between Tuen Mun and Tuen Mun South Stations.

MTR says the Tuen Mun South community has been developed for more than 40 years, posing challenges for construction. Alan Yan, MTR's head of Project Delivery-New Territories South, says that " We have limited space to work on ground and this why we designed a viaduct. We have very congested underground utilities comprising of probably more than 10 private and public companies. The third challenge is this is a major road in Tuen Mun South so we need to carry out a series of traffic diversions."

To create space for a foundation, Yan says MTR spent two years relocating underground conduits that constituted a length of 3.6 kilometres. The railway company also points out that Tuen Mun South Station will be designed compactly -- the platform and lobby will be on one level.

MTR says the construction process of Tuen Mun South Station has been going smoothly, stressing that it can be in service as expected by 2030.
