No.9 tropical cyclone and Amber rainstorm signals in force at 5am

At 5 a.m., Severe Typhoon Noul was centred about 80 kilometres northeast of Hong Kong Observatory (near 22.7 degrees north 114.8 degrees east) and is forecast to move northwest at about 18 kilometres per hour across the coast of eastern Guangdong.

Locally, gales are affecting many places with occasional storm force winds offshore and over high ground. Heavy squally showers associated with Noul are affecting Hong Kong.

Noul is currently closest to Hong Kong, skirting about 80 kilometres to the northeast of the territory. Increasing Gale or Storm Signal, No. 9, is expected to remain in force at least until 7 a.m. today. Depending on the local wind conditions, the Observatory will then consider issuing the Gale or Storm Signal, No. 8. Local winds are expected to back gradually from northwesterlies to southwesterlies. Areas which were previously sheltered may become exposed. Seas will be high with swells. Members of the public should remain on the alert.
