More Chinese medical experts arrive in DR Congo for Ebola response

China's third medical expert team on Saturday arrived in Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, on a mission to reinforce its epidemic response capacity.

The deployment comes after the World Health Organization determined in mid-May that surging Ebola infections in the central African nation constituted a "public health emergency of international concern."

DRC's health official welcomed the delegation at the airport, stating the arrival of Chinese experts would provide strong support for epidemic surveillance, patient treatment and lab testing.

The latest figures released by the country's public health authorities on Friday show the number of confirmed Ebola cases had climbed to 3,532, with 1,556 confirmed deaths.

The head of the team Yang Xiaochen says the specialists will build upon the foundational work laid by China's first two anti-epidemic teams this summer, while deepening exchanges and cooperation with Congolese health authorities and international partners.
