The US government has announced critical minerals and battery projects worth $3 billion and another $180 million in funding for mining schools as part of a broader campaign to develop a supply of critical minerals outside of China.
Beijing tightened its grip on its exports of rare earths last year in response to Washington's steep tariffs.
Efforts to boost domestic production of critical minerals become an even higher priority recently for the Trump administration as the Iran war continues to deplete stockpiles of missiles and other munitions.
US President Donald Trump says, "We're putting our miners back to work, and we're reclaiming America's rightful place as the minerals superpower of the world, which is what we are. People just didn't know that for a while...In addition, today, my administration is announcing a series of historic mining projects worth $3 billion, which will create thousands of jobs and promote our economic stability and security."
