White House Press Secretary Leavitt resigns to focus on family

US President Donald Trump announces White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt will be stepping down from the role at the end of the month.

Leavitt, at 28, is the youngest person to hold the position.

She recently returned to the White House after taking a brief leave for the birth of her second child in May.

Leavitt has been one of the most visible advocates of Trump's "Make America Great Again" movement.

The Republican president describes her as one of his "most trusted aides"

in a social media post announcing her departure.

He says Leavitt wants to spend more time with her family,

a decision Trump writes, "he totally understand and respect."

In a social media post, Leavitt says she felt she has not been able to devote

"constant time, energy and attention" required of the White House Press Secretary

as a mother of two young children.

Trump did not outline plans for who might replace her in the high-profile role.
