Likely workmanship or inspection issues at QM hospital building lifts

Multiple elevators at Queen Mary Hospital's new clinical building have failed to meet the required standards and need repair work.

After being opened in phases for over half a year, only 3 of the 28 lifts are available for public use.

But multiple glitches have occurred over the past months.

Some were trapped in the lifts.

The Hospital Authority, Architectural Services Department and the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department have issued a joint response, noting the lifts had not met the operational requirements specified in the contract.

Lawmaker Rebecca Chan slams the government for failing to provide a clear explanation and allegedly overlooking the safety of lift users at the hospital.

The lift and escalator trade union says it's rare that multiple lifts encounter problems at the same time and the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department has a role in overseeing the repairs and the issues might arise from workmanship or lapses during inspection and oversight.
