Pope returns to Vatican, mourns victims of Ebola outbreak in DRC

Pope Leo XIV, who has just returned to the Vatican City from Rimini and San Marino, addresses crowds at an Angelus prayer and offers prayers to victims of the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

From the window of the Apostolic Palace above St. Peter's Square, he encourages a response from the international society and local communities in preventive work to save human lives, as the fast-moving disease has killed at least 2,300 patients and become the deadliest outbreak on Congo's record.

The pope also expresses grief over the gold mine collapse unfolded in Zamboye on Tuesday that has killed more than 100 workers near the Cameroonian border.

Before closing his Sunday address, the pontiff marks the upcoming 10th anniversary of a 6.0-magnitude quake that lashed central Italy, invoking a final blessing for affected communities.
