President Xi meets Jordan's King Abdullah on Middle East tensions

President Xi Jinping welcomes visiting Jordanian King Abdullah II in Beijing and holds bilateral talks on the Mideast situation.

Xinhua News Agency reports both sides agree in a joint statement the US-Iran ceasefire should be maintained and that the normal passage in the Strait of Hormuz should be restored.

Red carpets are laid to welcome the Jordanian monarch Monday as he is on the final stop of the week-long state visit following stays in Shanghai and Shenzhen.

Inside the Great Hall of the People, Xi describes their relationships as "a vivid example" of win-win cooperation between countries with different social systems and sizes, while Abdullah ibn Al Hussein expresses respect for China's model of development and economic growth, and its leadership on the international stage.

Xi points out China is willing to strengthen coordination and collaboration on multilateral platforms with Jordan so as to promote greater development of their strategic partnership.

The foreign ministry has said Beijing stands ready to inject "new impetus into growing the bilateral ties," and work with Arab states to bolster mutually beneficial cooperation.

Regarding regional issues, Abdullah notes the two nations are aligned on the need to achieve "comprehensive calm and stability" in the Middle East as they both call for the preservation of the ceasefire between the United States and Iran.

The leaders concur that a comprehensive solution eliminating root causes of tensions ought to be reached via dialogue and negotiation.

The pair then oversees a signing ceremony of cooperation documents spanning across diplomacy, trade and economy, industrial and supply chains, and the judiciary.

Abdullah also holds separate meetings with Premier Li Qiang and top legislator Zhao Leji.
