Three years since Japan released first nuclear contaminated water

Japan has released about 173,000 tons of nuclear-contaminated

wastewater from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the

sea over the past three years.

The plant's operator TEPCO plans to increase the discharge of wastewater

starting from this fiscal year, with the goal of completely decommissioning

the plant by 2051.

Struck by a magnitude 9 earthquake in 2011, the Fukushima nuclear plant

released radiation, resulting in a level-7 nuclear accident, the highest on

the acknowledged international scale.

Despite concerns and opposition from the international community with

China being the most vocal, as well as from local fishermen and businesses,

Japan launched the wastewater discharge

in 2023.
