The Centre for Food Safety urges residents to stop consuming a prepackaged rice vermicelli imported from Taiwan after the product was detected to contain trace amount of formaldehyde.

The CFS says its test result shows that the sample contained formaldehyde at a level of 12 parts per million.

While authorities say the detected amount of formaldehyde is unlikely to pose any adverse health effect on normal consumption, it is illegal to use formaldehyde as a food preservative under the Hong Kong law.
